SOMEWHERE │ Online Exhibition August 2024
Text by Antonio Muratore

Somewhere is the theme that brings together the works exhibited here, it’s a journey to those places and undefined contexts, fantastic places in which you can get lost, places of escape from reality where freedom is lived by finding that sense of union and harmonious cohesion with the environment. Places that reveal the personal perception of the world and the authentic emotional experience, where our self is transported by osmosis in a space without time and "without place".
.
Humankind’s innate primordial instinct of discovery is the origin of the curiosity that stimulates us to go beyond, to understand what presents itself beyond the spaces already lived, a curiosity that opens new horizons and new paths to knowledge, development and evolution.
Evoking undefined places means living and identifying in those contexts that offer new perceptions of reality and self, and that stimulate the senses, making us more receptive, and enriching our stock of information that permits us to elaborate new reflections, thoughts and creative ideas. The focus of this collection is not to present geographical places that inform us of their physiological characteristics that distinguish them from others; the presentation of this collection is in fact an invitation to participate, to be present in those atmospheres letting us be carried on to the emotional plane. The works presented here refer mainly to settings that stimulate not a discovery of places, but a (re-)discovery of the self.
.
The exhibition as a whole is in some way connected with what the history of visual arts has already presented to us: "non-places" are found in romantic works, which from the second half of the '700, consistently with the German movement “Sturm und Drang”, manifest a human perception and feeling giving space to sentimentality and introspection, but they are also those of the symbolist, metaphysical and surrealist works, reaching then the virtual ones of contemporary art.
Those present here are almost dreamlike places, they are presented as "safe places" where you can live the experiences without the pitfalls of the real world: ... The fantastic stories, art, mythology and fairy tales are perhaps born with this intent, to meet humankind’s need to recreate safe worlds.. It is here that one deeply enjoys the experience with the unknown, this is the unknown "without pitfalls,", that unknown that makes us live in a fluid and fulfilling way, that sense of confusion, the experience of discovery and wonder.
.
When it is not about settings the subjects of these works are figures dissociated from their context, as if immersed in another dimension in search of a refuge from reality, in those spaces and mental places where one can find their own self, their own history and their own becoming.

AGNESE GOLIA
Bare │ Photography, 2024
—
The feeling of the sublime, of the complete immersion with the infinite and of the immediate fusion with what I percieve. I feel so infinitely small, yet so big. I’m naked from all the things that have always been important to me. Now, nothing really matters. What does the person see? What do they feel? The black sorrounding the subject wants to invite the viewer to imagine the vision.

Wonder │ Photography, 2024
—
The subject is standing on a peak to contemplate the landscape. This is not only beauty: it is a greatness that manages to awaken the soul from the banality and boredom of everyday life. It is a glow that strikes our brain. We are beings in constant search of this glare, in constant search of wonder, and only nature can satisfy us.

ALICE MURATORE
Dove Piovono Cristalli (Where It Rains Crystals) │ Photography, 2023
—
Dove piovono cristalli is a personal research that leads to a reflection on existence and on impermanence of earthly things. Through an exploratory and performative investigation, the author queries about existence after death, understood not as an end, but as a change of state. In an imaginary outside of time, a crystals rain allows us to bridge the gap between what we can see and what we cannot see, becoming access to a parallel dimension between the visible and the invisible.

When? │ Photography, 2024

Earth, in the form of a cube, the steady form of matter, is one of the five Platonic Solids, shapes repeated throughout the known Universe from molecules to large structures and beyond. Getting in touch with these perfect realities creates an immediate relationship, allowing us to recognize ourselves as a part of them and align with the essential forms of Nature.

I’m afraid - I said. The wind has taken my words and made them go around the world. The sea has heard. I feel alone - I said. The stones listened and contemplated the blue sky. The sea heard. I want you - I said. The void ate my words, and it felt even more hungry. The sea heard. The sea smiled at me. The sea welcomed me.

CAINY YIRU YAN
St Edmund Church, Southwood │ Photography, 2023
—
Three pieces from the 'Elegies of Sanctity' series, merging laser scans and photopolymer etchings, reflect the convergence of nature, spirituality, and time. Capturing the intricate decay of three overlooked UK churches in 2023, these works juxtapose modern and traditional imaging techniques. It unveils a realm where structures, once symbols of human awe, are reclaimed by nature, creating a new art. This series contemplates our transient existence, nature's lasting power, and the intricate interplay between human pursuits and the ephemeral world.

CHUNG CHAK
Delivery Tricycle and Factories Buildings │ Digital, 2023
—
Gentrifications are unavoidable. Yet, they lead to the relocation of the poor. Reflecting on my family's experience in Hong Kong in the 70s, we were removed from the city center to the outskirts. My father complained, but Hong Kong blossomed. Observing numerous urban redevelopments in Beijing, I photographed random walls being torn down and reconstructed them into harmonic entities, symbolizing the conflicts between individual and collective interests. They serve as a poetic documentation of present-day Beijing while evoking memories of my childhood in Hong Kong.

—
My work focuses on capturing the fleeting beauty of nature and exploring the interaction between humans and the environment. For this submission, I present a photograph of a silhouette at sunset, surrounded by a peaceful natural setting. Using an analog camera with triple exposure, the image has a soft and dreamy quality, blending the human figure with the natural landscape, suggesting harmony and connection.

Abstract ice defiantly contrasting jet-black sand mimics the kaleidoscopic physiological component of emotion. Behind every image is a reason to verge on what authentically interests the mind concurrently allowing escape from what’s truly there. Why then not simply submit to enjoy the beauty in the moment notwithstanding an elusive world?

On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijani troops shelled Stepanakert, the largest city of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, a mountainous enclave populated mainly by Armenians, but recognized by the international community as part of Azerbaijan. I used to think what made a place home were the people living there. This photograph was taken during my last trip back home, Uruguay. The Palm Boys │ Photography, 2022

I saw some kids between the palm trees playing and joking with each other. One of them was carrying a bundle of dry palm leaves over his head while the others laughed and chased each other. The scene reminded me that no matter how hard life can be, no matter where you are, it doesn’t take much to smile. I couldn’t help but capture the simplicity, but power of this moment framed in this surreal context.

Resilience as the basis of something greater. Not just resistance but going beyond robustness; not merely withstand a shock but actually improving because of it. The ability to absorb the inclements of life and make them one's own to thrive through it. All the Light We Cannot See │ Photography, 2024
—
The relationship between the supernatural and religion is deeply intertwined, as both deal with phenomena that transcend the ordinary experiences of life. At the heart of this connection lies the role of the supernatural as a fundamental bridge between the known, tangible world and the mysterious, often ineffable realms that lie beyond human understanding. All the Light We Cannot See was born as an exploration of beliefs and questions I ask myself along my journey.

GRACEFUL MADNESS
Glasgow Rain │ Photography, 2023

Crafted from a series of images taken in Glasgow in 2022, with photos of New York and Paris infused, this artwork is a homage to the places I hold dear. It explores the profound sense of detachment that arises when one's heart and soul are burdened, mirroring the world's reflection of this inner turmoil. Despite the enveloping gloom, the piece whispers a message of hope: the pursuit of light and beauty can lead us through the darkness.

Photography is my only way of capturing moments that stop in time and become indelible memories. My vision focuses on architectural photography, where the absence of people reveals the hidden stories of human and social activities that take place in those places. In each shot, I try to capture the waiting, the passage of time and the dynamics between presence and absence. Each image tells a silent story, inviting viewers to reflect on the depth of each place.

Through organic layers, a woman contorts and reforms amongst a sky-blue field. Nature dictates the majority of what we see. When immersed in a dream or recalling our past, we attempt to hold on to the impalpable. This moment in time appears close, but it is slightly out of reach. A new figure enters the space and appears to interrupt the woman’s solitude - or possibly contributes to it, while we continue to decipher our connection with her.

Photo taken from the "Bifröst" project, carried out north of the Arctic Circle, from Tromsø to the Lofoten Islands (Norway). I wandered into this “film noir” atmosphere where I felt both lost and out of place. Free. Exit the postcards of the picturesque red wooden house and other ready-made ideas... Faithful to this feeling of brutal and liberating purity, I captured a palette of harsh landscapes, rare light, in shades of black and white with an omnipresent grain.

Through the war and death that have permeated our land, I have started to ponder more often, what comes after? Honestly, I don't want to believe that the end can be so irreversible. Maybe there is still life after all? Easy and calming. I want to show the story of human souls through the example of one. How does a soul look when it leaves the human body and becomes free? It wanders the world, absorbing the wisdom of the years lived, but with pure delight. Because now, there is nothing to worry about. In this way, I give a second chance to my soul and demonstrate that life will continue.
