"Beyond is a part of my series Kekta, which examines the transitions and fluidity of cultural identity in today’s society. As we are less and less bounded by geographical borders we are also challenged to reconsider the old ways of thinking about national and cultural identities. My approach is through a personal experience of living between two cultures. I created scenes that are inspired by the immemorial beliefs of unity between humans and nature, and cultural traditions that have been passed on for generations in the form of oral folk tales about Finnish mythology. I took the Finnish stories and photographed them in a variety of American landscapes, with people from different ethnic backgrounds, creating a new narrative of polycultural identity. Beyond portrays a story of a strong-willed young girl Aino, who drowns herself as the only way out from an arranged marriage. She turns into a mermaid and is welcomed into the underwater kingdom." - L. L.
